Clinical Master’s Research Fellowships
The NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) has funds available to support Clinical Master's Research Fellowships for health care professionals in the Perioperative and Critical Care (PCC) Theme.
Scheme Outline
The funds [1] will support Healthcare Professionals from within the University of Southampton/University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Partnership at 0.4 FTE of the successful applicant’s salary for up to 3 years (personnel external to the partnership can apply but it will be necessary to identify suitable contractual arrangements and/or a funding mechanism). This will enable the applicant to conduct clinical research leading to the award of a master’s degree. It is hoped that the award will make applicants competitive for a Research Leaders Programme, or doctoral training application (e.g. MRC, NIHR, Wellcome Trust) which would then support the applicant beyond the funded period.
The fellowship research topic is Perioperative and Critical Care Data Analysis; the research falls within the PCC Theme at the BRC. The successful applicant will work within a multidisciplinary team including clinicians, data scientists and industrial partners1 to deliver cutting edge clinical research using large scale datasets.
It is a requirement that the successful applicant registers for a suitable master’s degree [2] at a recognised UK Higher Education Institution (HEI). To ensure the chosen degree aligns with the research output of the fellowship, potential applicants are required to discuss the suitability of the proposed master’s with the Theme Leads (Mike Grocott, Denny Levett or representative) before applying for this fellowship (please send all related messages and enquiries to BRC-applications@uhs.nhs.uk).
Student fees for the master’s course will be met by the BRC at the UK/Home Student level. All successful awardees are expected to be active in conducting research suitable for publication. This award can be combined with clinical commitments/training, but applicants will need to have secured permission to be released and considered their position beyond the end of BRC support.
