Pioneering research across the lifecourse

The NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) takes new discoveries, treatments and technologies into the clinic, using unique tools, facilities and world-changing expertise.


It is a longstanding partnership between the University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT), funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). It comprises over 600 researchers from across the partnership.


We spoke to BRC director Professor Mike Grocott to discover the people and themes delivering life-changing research.

 

What are the BRC’s key themes and objectives?


Our aim is to improve people’s health and resilience throughout life through world-class experimental medicine. We are developing better treatments and care across five key research areas.


How are researchers within the BRC enhancing patient care and outcomes?


Southampton has been at the forefront of nutrition and respiratory research for over two decades. Our breakthroughs in deliberate allergen exposure and lifelong prevention of fractures have improved treatments and guidance for patients in the south and across the UK. The BRC also played a key role in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What are your goals for the culture of your centre?


Our culture is being shaped around seven foundational principles of focus, integration, democratisation, person-centredness, inclusivity, collaboration and efficiency.


We want to deliver a welcoming and enabling research environment that is known and valued as fair, open and supportive to all.


We involve patients and the public in all that we do. This helps us drive research that is ever-more relevant to people’s needs, delivered faster and adopted more readily.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

How does the BRC support researchers? 


We are constantly striving to realise the full potential of our researchers. This focus is pivotal to delivering world-class experimental medicine both now and long into our future.


Our offering includes PhD studentships, post-doctoral bridging funding and support for independent researchers who are applying for senior awards. Find out more


Funding from our BRC supports some staff at key facilities and services for Southampton experimental medicine. These include mass spectroscopy, data learning, LifeLab, pollution monitoring and cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

How does the BRC work in collaboration with regional partners? 


We work closely with other NIHR infrastructure, including:

 

  • NIHR Southampton Clinical Research Facility (CRF)

  • NIHR Applied Research Collaborative (ARC) for Wessex

  • Southampton Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC)

  • Southampton Clinical Trials Unit


Our BRC is a founding member of the Wessex NIHR Experimental Medicine Network (containing nine NHS Trusts and three universities) within Wessex Health Partners. This delivers an integrated experimental research system across Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight.
